Watch: ‘Ennapane’ – Susheela Raman

Susheela Raman played the best gig of the year so far at the Blue Frog last night. Her set comprised predominantly new material from an album expected later this year.

‘Ennapane’ was the last song performed by Ms Raman before the encore. A packed Tuesday night Blue Frog stood riveted as she repeated the powerful chorus that only a few understood. With part of the Rajasthan Roots crew in support, the compelling songstress made her case for believing in the power of music. We’re converts.

Watch.

For heavens sake !! Am I the only one who thinks this is extremely shallow ?? She has taken some Tamil devotional chants, some very very basic Tabla ideas and mish-mashed all of it together. There is nothing wrong with inspired creativity, but not something where:
1)You are not doing any sort of justice to the original, leave alone making it better or bringing a new perspective to it.
2)You bring nothing new to the table with your “inspired” version
This sorta thing probably works outside the country, but we in the country should be able to separate the wheat from the chaff…
