SEAN PAUL POSTPONES INDIA GIGS

You know things are fishy in the subcontinent when the stock market crashes, the cricket team is winning a test match and an ageing has-been rock band cancels a tour for largely vague reasons. Adding to the overall shadyness of the geography is the news of the postponement of popular hip-hop artist Sean Paul’s India gigs.

Indivibe confirms the postponement of the dates. There is no indication yet of when these dates will be rescheduled and no explanation of why the gigs need to be postponed. So if you were hoping to get busy this Diwali, make alternate arrangements.

Jay Sean recently played Hard Rock Cafe, though the most impressive hip-hop act to hit Indian shores in the last couple of years is undoubtedly 50 Cent. Head downstairs for excerpts from the review of Fiddy’s gig in November last year.

Though the gig kicked off about an hour and a half late, it was obvious that punctuality was not the facet of the man the crowd had gathered to observe. Armed with as much bling and show as a suburban lifestyle would afford, the men and women were intent on displaying their affectation to the ‘ghetto’ lifestyle. By about 9pm, the venue was packed, so much so that to get a good photograph, we actually had to climb one of the stage support pillars. The stage itself was largely empty save for a DJ console right in the middle and a video wall at the back. The lights went out and gun shots ring. In comes the man himself followed closely by G-Unit support from Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo.

The set comprised material from all three Fiddy releases though there were a couple of extra tracks thrown in from the recently released Curtis. What was surprising though, apart from the fact that there weren’t any Latin beachwear models on stage, was the crowd support that the group received. The majority of the crowd vociferously threw back every single lyric delivered while the rest jumped and grooved without care or caution. The atmosphere was electric; this even without the support of an opening act. Singles like ‘Ayo Technology’, ‘Candy Shop’ and ‘P.I.M.P.’ had the audience in a frenzy especially with the clever DJ work and Mr. Cent’s irresistible New York charm.
