Music based reality shows on television are not as exciting as they used to be. Band based reality shows however, because of their dearth, are always fun. Remember Launchpad? That scene where Them Clones refused to perform a rendition instead of just a cover? And Demonic Resurrection (was it?) playing Madonna?
Indie label Phat Phish (Avial, Da-Saz) are gearing up to launch a new reality show called ‘The Big Band’. The show will be an elimintation based thing judged by some ‘industry leaders’ including AR Rahman. Surprisingly the show will be broadcast on Doordarshan which is not usually the channel of choice when it comes to reality shows (or and shows, right?). Still, at least now they’re guaranteed an audience of millions.
The top 12 finalists will share Rs 1 crore in prize money, equipment, etc. Also
The winner of The Big Band will be awarded an enviable 3-year recording contract with Phat Phish Records that includes:
- Up to 3 albums, involving recording/producing, national/international and physical/digital distribution
- Up to 6 music videos (on average 2 per album)
- Tours and concerts amounting to a minimum of 50 events on the national and international stage
- National and international promotion and marketing of your band and associated content (albums, gigs, music videos, and merchandise)
- Grooming and mentoring from the leading producers and musicians in the industry
That’s a pretty sweet deal, though the official website states
The Big Band is focused on providing a credible platform to promote ethnic and contemporary bands in India that create original music.
If this show is being telecast on DD, chances are that ethnic > contemporary.
