LIVE: ABIOGENESIS @ BLUE FROG

A rain soaked weekend resulted in less than 20 people showing up for Dimapur band Abiogenesis’s gig at Blue Frog on Sunday. But that did not stop the five-piece from giving their all on stage. Howey music, their self-crafted fusion of Naga folk music and rock, was never expected to hit it off instantly with listeners but their sonic experiments sounded a whole lot more accessible live than they do on paper.

Many have come to live with the fact that any Blue Frog gig slated for a 9:30pm start time won’t start before 10:00pm. In an effort to ensure that their gigs do start on time, any time, the guys at the Frog have decided to push all gigs to 10:30pm. According to the club’s weekly mailer
As with so many things at Blue Frog, there’s no set precedent to which we can turn for the perfect formula to keep everything in balance and everybody pleased as Punch. And in our constant experimentation and tweaking, we’ve decided to go back to our tried ’n true gig timings of 10:30pm on all show nights (Tues-Sun)
So if you need to work a little later, drive a little slower, or stop over at home to pick up the family, no problem: we’ll see you at the Frog!
What this means is two things. First, the gigs will probably start only 10-15 minutes late - any later and weekday gigs will have no audiences whatsoever. Second, all those folks who used to break traffic laws to make it to the club before 9:00pm to avoid the 300 bucks entry (hey, 300 bucks for an average of eight nights is 2,400 bucks and with drinks over four grand a month) have been given a big “Fuck you” by the club’s owners.

Stick a glockenspiel, a ukulele and a few handclaps on a young folk-pop quartet and voila, the claim of new Neutral Milk Hotel is easy to throw around. Add a reference to a Wes Anderson movie and you’ve got yourself something that’s either very easy to dismiss as contrived or very easy to love. There’s no middle ground here.
